UHRICHSVILLE – The score continued to go up, as the Huskies ran over the Mustangs last Friday, with a final score of 47-37. It was the seventh time the Huskies and Mustangs met and the outcome remained the same; the Huskies returned home with another victory.

“This was a good win,” said head coach Justin Kropka. “Winning the season opener on the road is always big and I hope it sets the tone for the rest of the season. Our defense was slow in forming, but picked-up things up as the game went on. We have a job ahead of us at Weir. They are a big team and physical team and we will have to really step up. However, we will continue the season by taking it one game at a time. Right now I am glad over this win and proud of the team’s performance,” he added.

CADIZ – Following a brief hiatus, the Cadiz and Freeport Baseball Associations, formed and sponsored a 2010, 6-8 year old, Harrison County All-Stars Baseball Team.

For the county, the all-star group will be the first in about two years. The team, comprised of young athletes from around the county, recently competed in two area tournaments. Coach Larry Bossell said the team members were appreciative of their opportunity to once again be involved in the all-star games. “This was a good experience for the kids,” said Bossell. “All the participants performed well together and enjoyed every moment of being part of a combined tournament team.”

“Events such as these help prepare the kids in the county for a future of playing together as Huskies. We hope we can do this more often in the future. All of us want to thank the sponsors for giving the kids this opportunity,” he concluded. The All-Star group played in tournaments held in Toronto and St.Clairsville.

LIGONIER – On Sunday, August 8 both Jewett-Scio cheerleading squads competed at the All Star and Recreational Cheerleading Competition held at Idlewild and Soak Zone Amusement Park in Ligonier, Pa. The third and fourth grade squad, coached by Terra Frye and Joanna Dulkoski, competed in the Pee Wee Recreational Division for ages nine and under against seven other squads. The squad earned fifth place but trophies were only awarded through fourth place. The ten cheerleaders competing were: Sara Bethel, Alana Dulkoski, Brea Edwards, Alivia Frye, Tiara Logsdon, Alexee McAfee, Annastasia Menapace, Sierra Satterfield, Courtney Wallin, and Kily Wright.
The fifth and sixth grade squad placed third in the Youth Recreational Division for ages 12 and under. The squad is coached by Wendy Chrisman and Tina Cooper. There were five teams in the division and the Vikings were the only non-mounting squad. The competition was very stiff and the girls did a great job competing for the first time this year.

HOPEDALE – The Hopedale Baseball Association hosted a four-day, 11 and under baseball tournament. Teams making it to the consolation games were the Hopedale Haymakers and Team Steubenville, with Steubenville defeating Hopedale.

Teams making it to the tournament’s championship game were Team Wintersville and the Warwood Wildthings, with Warwood finishing in first place.

Golfers from the Cadiz Country Club Ladies Golf Association tee off on August 4 for the first round of their Club Championship. The second round will take place on August 11 with the August 18 set aside as a rain date.

First place and runner up trophies will be awarded to the winners of each flight. Billie Stanwick, with the assistance of Theresa Stotler, set up tee times for the players, post scores and determine the teams and tee times for the following week.

Ladies gathered for play on July 21 for a game of “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda” in which each golfer picked two holes to deduct from their scores before heading for the tees. Many felt they “shoulda” picked different holes to deduct. Of course, they “woulda” if they “coulda” known how they’d play!

Taking home the cash were Cathy Shepherd in A flight, Carol Dannemiller in B Flight, and Ginny Ferrell in C Flight with Nep Rowland and Bonnie Beetham in a tie for Least Putts of the field. Several members gathered again on July 28 for a relaxing game of Low Net, Least Putts. Once again, Cathy Shepherd claimed the prize in A Flight, while Peg Buchanan was the winner in B Flight and Ginny Ferrell outplayed the others in C Flight. Nep Rowland took the prize for least putts of the field and Joann Watson hailed a “chip-in” on hole #14.

Richmond – The Lady Huskies wrapped up the season with a 7-2 win over Toronto IGA to become Edison Softball League’s 14 and under champions.
“This is a well disciplined and self motivated team. I know that I speak for all of the coaches when I say that it has been a pleasure coaching this year,” said Husky head coach Richard Dunfee.
The Lady Huskies set their goal to be champions at the beginning of the season, with focus and determination they achieved it. Congratulations!

TAPPAN LAKE – For 15 years the Tappan Lake Park has been the site of an annual basketball camp for boys and girls ranging from grades one through high school.
This year with representation of kids from Carrollton, Claymont, Indian Creek, New Philadelphia, Massillon and Massillon Perry, Indian Valley and Florida, over 35 kids participated in the Park sponsored event. The camp, that began on Monday ran though Friday, was conducted from 8 a.m. till 11 p.m.
“We have been doing this a long time,” said camp director Paul Banks. “I have enjoyed every moment of working with the kids and seeing the results at the end. I had good help this year with the camp and that always makes things go better. The park staff and the volunteers have always been a big part of this event, and they always do a good job,” he added.
Also assisting Banks this year with the camp were former Husky athletes Loni Koch, Kristen Banks, Sarah Wilden and Ty Kenny. “We teach fundamentals and use a class room type setting to present videos and answer questions,” Banks added. “We then apply through practical application, the things that the videos present,” he concluded.
Using both basketball courts at the grounds, the campers are divided into two groups by age and grade. Each camper receives individual attention as needed, and is involved in all of the days planning. At the conclusion of the camp each participant is presented a t-shirt. An awards ceremony is held with plagues going to the campers who have excelled in the fundamental categories. The week long event is ultimately concluded with a meal prepared and served by the park’s staff.

CADIZ – Eight runs by the end of the fourth inning, made a short night’s work for the Lady Huskies, as they defeated the Amsterdam Liberty by a score of 12-0.

With the win, the Huskies are now 9-1, as they begin looking ahead to the league’s play-offs. “We have a couple of regular season games left,” said coach Rich Dunfee. “I’m proud of the team’s performance this year and their record of 9-1 speaks of the talent these girls’ possess. We are mentally preparing for the upcoming play-offs, and we feel that we are ready to continue to perform just as we have all season,” he added.

For the win, Kara Dunfee would be on the mound for the Huskies. Dunfee would handout eight strikeouts and yield a deuce in the free pass department.

From the plate, Katie Elzy would lead the offense with three singles. Kiley Staley would lend two singles to the win, while Dunfee would also throw-in a single of her own.

For Amsterdam, pitcher Abbi Matta would be recorded as the loser. The loss left the Liberty with a 4-6 record. Dave Matta coaches the Amsterdam Liberty.
