Local native recounts Triumph cruise ordeal

Jewett native on Triumph 1 2-23Jewett native Rhonda Ebel’s contest prize of a trip aboard the Carnival cruise ship Triumph turned into a four-day ordeal earlier this month as she and about 4,200 passengers and ship employees dealt with a fire and subsequent power outage that stranded them in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ebel, pictured here with husband and fellow passenger, David, managed to remain in her room and conserve water for drinking and hand washing, but said many people slept on deck beneath sheets in a makeshift areas dubbed “Tent City.”  She noted that employees worked non-stop to correct problems.
