    This week marked the 145th anniversary of the 14th Amendment, which was adopted on July 9, 1868, by the U.S. Congress following the Civil War. Few may know that the Constitutional rule most likely stems from U.S. Rep. John Bingham’s roots in Harrison County and his purported friendship with classmate and former slave Titus Basfield while the men attended Franklin College in New Athens.

    Bingham’s statue still stands tall today outside the county courthouse in Cadiz.
