Bomb scare clears school

Bomb scare 9-14

A bomb scare temporarily emptied Harrison East Elementary School in Hopedale last Monday, leading authorities to search the building with the aid of a bomb-sniffing dog.

Superintendent Dana Snider said the word “bomb” was found written in small letters on a wall inside one of the bathrooms but leaders still took precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff.

“We erred on the side of caution,” she said. “It’s a good chance for a drill and I appreciate all of the cooperation from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office and Hopedale and Cadiz Fire Departments.”

Principal Bert Tharp said the school regularly holds drills and everyone responded accordingly.

Nothing was found and classes resumed that afternoon.

More details on the bomb scare are available in this weeks print edition of the Harrison News-Herald.

Looking at that photo of what was probably Hopedale High School, I can see why that town and this builidng won out over the older facility that was the grade school in Jewett. Too bad that Jewett never had the money nor the initiative to upgrade the existing building. I have very warm feelings of all those events that I participated in when the Jewett School system was in existence.
