Many measures to decide at the polls

 CADIZ – A series of levies and issues are on the ballot during the Nov. 5 general election, and the following is a rundown of what people will view while at the polls.

–Buckeye Joint Vocational School District, 1-mill renewal levy for permanent improvements for five years;

–Jefferson County JVS, an additional 1-mill for permanent improvements for seven years;

–Edison Local School District, a 5.9-mill additional levy for current expenses over five years;

–Athens Township, two renewal levies, respectively a 1-mill and a half-mill, to cover cemetery maintenance over five years;

–Cadiz Twp., two replacement levies, respectively at 0.44-mills and 1-mill, for cemetery maintenance plus a 1-mill renewal levy for fire protection, all over five years;

–Franklin Twp., a half-mill replacement levy for cemetery maintenance and a 1-mill renewal levy for fire truck and equipment over five years for the Tappan Lake Fire District;

–Freeport Twp., a 1.5-mill renewal levy for cemetery maintenance and a 1.5-mill renewal measure for fire protection, both over five years;

–German Twp., a 1-mill renewal levy for cemetery maintenance over five years;

–Moorefield Twp., a 0.4-mill renewal levy for cemetery maintenance and a 2-mill renewal levy for fire protection, both over five years;

–Nottingham Twp., a 1-mill renewal levy for fire protection over five years;

–Rumley Twp., a 2-mill renewal levy for fire protection over five years;

–Stock Twp., a 1-mill renewal levy for fire protection and a 1-mill renewal levy for road maintenance, both over five years;

–Bowerston Village, a 1-mill renewal levy for park expenses over five years;

–Cadiz Village, a local liquor option for Cadiz Village SW;

–Freeport Village, a 0.89-mill renewal levy for current expenses over five years;

–Harrisville Village, a half-mill renewal levy for current expenses over five years;

–Hopedale Village, a 1.6-mill renewal levy for current expenses over five years;

–Jewett Village, two 1-mill levies for current expenses and a 1-mill additional levy for police protection, both over five years;

–New Athens, a 1-mill renewal levy for current expenses and a 1-mill additional levy, both for current expenses over five years;

–Scio, a 0.88-mill renewal levy for current expenses, a 0.88-mill renewal levy for park expenses and a 2-mill renewal levy for current expenses, both over five years, and an option for electric aggregation.

Candidates have filed in races across the area for the general election, but some communities are also facing vacancies. The following are among the selections:

TOWNSHIPS

–Archer Township; James E. Albright, 40680 Lower Clearfork Road, Cadiz, and Aaron Dodds, 83510 Bakers Ridge Road, Cadiz, trustees;

–Athens Twp.: David Butler, 117 E. Wheeling St., New Athens, and Michael T. Saffell, 103 S. Main St., New Athens, trustees;

–Cadiz Twp. NE: C. Scott Porter, 380 Oak Park Road, Cadiz, and Clint Barr, 111 Old Steubenville Pike Road, Cadiz, trustees;

–Franklin Twp.: Robert A. Haney, 32060 Moravian Trail Road, Tippecanoe, and Richard A. Huff, 30500 Weavers Run Road, Tippecanoe, trustees. Two seats are available;

–Freeport Twp.: Randy L. Cunningham, 30290 Piedmont-Freeport Road, Freeport; Chris Arnold, 220 S. High St., Freeport; and Elaine Mace, 101 Pine St., Freeport, trustees. Two posts are available;

–Monroe Twp.: Lee O. Gladman, 88220 Willis Run Road, Uhrichsville; Gene Busby, 34060 Scio-Bowerston Road, Bowerston; Brad Weber, 88250 Mill Hill Road, Bowerston; and Tom Ferguson, 88290 Plum Run Road, Uhrichsville, trustees. Two posts are available;

–Moorefield Twp.: Rick A. Moore, 35800 Cadiz-Piedmont Road, Cadiz; and Jody L. Hyde, 76245 Scott Hill Road, Flushing, trustees. Two seats are available. Toni Starosciak, 37685 Cadiz-Piedmont Road, Cadiz, and Sheri Miller, 33260 Cadiz-Piedmont Road, Cadiz, are both seeking the clerk’s position;

–North Twp.: Danny L. Henry, 90480 Kilgore Ridge Road, Scio, and Travis Albaugh, 38160 Tappan-Scio Road, Scio, trustees. Two seats are available;

–Nottingham Twp.: Shirley Fair, 34600 McFadden Road, Freeport, and Anthony M. Knight, 81305 Ourant Road, Cadiz, trustees. Two seats are available;

–Rumley Twp.: K. Eugene Bailey, 103 Stahl St., Jewett; Matthew A. Dulkoski, 44450 Jewett-Hopedale Road, Jewett; Ronald B. Leggett, 41730 Rumley Road, Jewett; and James Skipper, 87451 Vale Road, Jewett, trustees. Two posts are available;

–Shortcreek Twp.: John A. Stanko, 48280 Foxes Bottom Road, Cadiz; Jay Hopkins, 238 Devore St., Cadiz; David Rinkes Sr., 49475 High St., Cadiz; and Andrew Filippi, 79101 Croskey Road, Cadiz, trustees. Two seats are available;

–Stock Twp.: Stephen A. Jones, 84125 Wallace Road, Cadiz; Mike S. Henderson, 36780 Tappan-Scio Road, Scio; and Collin Albaugh, 38170 Lightner Road, Scio, trustees. Two seats are available. Ron Albright, 38055 Lightner Ridge Road, Scio, and Gary Bouska, 85655 Merryman Road, Cadiz, are contending for one unexpired trustee’s seat;

–Washington Twp.: Douglas E. Crabtree, 80950 Davis St., Tippecanoe, and Corey Smith, Riggs Hollow Road, Tippecanoe, trustees. Two seats are available.

VILLAGES

–Adena: Carol A. Bednar, 96 Park Ave., and Justin Dudzik, 399 E. Main St., both seek the mayor’s seat. Mark Anderson, 100 E. Main St., and Dean Carothers, 401 S. Bridge St., are running for council and one other seat remains open. Sharon L. Hopkins, 101 Devore St., Adena, is running for the board of public affairs (BPA);

–Bowerston: Jerry L. McLandsborough, 104 Boyce Drive, and 400 E. Main St., council. Two more council seats are open;

–Cadiz: Terry Capers, 587 Dewey Ave.; Larry Sickle, 162 Martin Ave.; Daniel E. Ossman, 745 E. Market St., Jim Drexler, 370 Oak Park; and Albert Peters, 323 Grant St., council. Four seats are available. Shirley A. Collier, 298 Charleston St., is running for the village BPA;

–Deersville: Four seats are open with no candidates running;

–Freeport: Marie Karl, P.O. Box 161, council. Four other seats remain open;

–Harrisville: Sharon Friend-Dale, P.O. Box 235, mayor, with three council seats open;

–Hopedale: Ronald Hawkins, 354 High St.; Donald Jochims, 320 High St; Donald Writesel, 502 Writesel Drive; and Rob Raber, 46515 Old Hopedale Road, council. There are no candidates running for one BPA spot;

–Jewett: There are four council spots open with no candidates filed;

–New Athens: Joseph Tomolonis, 123 S. Main St.; Tosha Giesey, 180 N. Main St.; Ellis Abel, 169 N. Main St.; and David M. Vargo, P.O. Box 232, council, with four seats available. Will Sedgmer is seeking the unexpired term for mayor;

–Scio: Michelle Carpenter, 111 Hilltop Drive, is running for mayor. Andrew Turner, 101 Custer Way; Peggy Harrison, 105 Sunset Drive; Earl L. Whiteman, 140 Hilltop Drive; Fred McFarland, 210 E. College St.; and Ronald Thompson II, 119 Carrollton St., council. Four council seats are available.

BOARD OF EDUCATION

–Harrison Hills City School District: Deborah V. Kenny, 426 Park Ave., Cadiz; James Melvin Allen, 75000 Smyrna Road, Freeport; and John E. Harrison, 105 Sunset Drive, Scio. Three seats are available;

–Conotton Valley School District: Leroy Bowdish, 86660 Beaver Dam Road, Scio; Chris Bower, 603 Busby Drive, Bowerston; Deborah Carrothers, 91430 Hidden Valley Drive, Bowerston; and Kari Galigher, 8307 Deer Road SW, Bowerston. Three seats are available;

–Edison Local School District: Scott O. Lockhart, 1004 Smallwood St., Empire, John Prokopakis, 68 Cemetery Lane, Bloomingdale (unexpired term); and Warner Sanders, 10648 State Route 152, Toronto (write-in). Three seats are available;

–Buckeye Local School District: Mike R. Belon, 58170 Main St., Martins Ferry; Edmund F. Blazeski Jr., 305 Central Ave., Tiltonsville; James Cesario, 96 Eileen St., Rayland; Russell L. Cominsky, 110 Grandview Ave., Tiltonsville; Dale G. Dollison, 1005 Labelle St., Brilliant; Charles S. Haggerty, 23 Montenery Road, Rayland; Naoma M. Kolkedy, 73950 E. –Jefferson County Educational Service Center: Barbara J. Cunningham, 1116 Gilchrist St., Brilliant; R. Larry George, 98 Hilda Circle,Bloomingdale; and Kenneth D. Simeral, 4895 State Route 152, Richmond. There are three seats available;

–East Central Ohio Board of Education: Roy Cherry, 4344 Sherrod Valley Drive SW, Sherrodsville, and Phillip J. Schumach, 122 High St., Tuscarawas. There are two to be elected from Tuscarawas County with one from Carroll County, but the third seat remains vacant.
