HOPEDALE – Harrison East students and faculty participated in Pennies for Patients program through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They had a three-week time frame to collect as much change as they could and raised a whopping $1,413.02 to support such a great cause.
Each grade level was challenged to raise the most money to win an ice-cream party. The top three grade levels were as follows: Fifth grade students from Mrs. Jones, Mr. Valesko, and Mrs. McCann’s classes won the GOLD medal collecting $311 with sixth grade right on their heels winning the SILVER with $208 from Mrs. McKinney, Mrs. Cochran and Ms. Van Camp’s classes, and the BRONZE goes out to the first graders in Ms. Elliott, Mrs. Stinespring, Mrs. Doty, and Miss Snider’s classes raising $160.
For two months, students donated fleece and fiber-fill stuffing for tie blankets and pillows for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Their goal was to make 50 blankets and they surpassed it by making 65 blankets and 10 pillows. The blankets were made in various sizes from infant to toddler to teenager.
Letters and cards were also sent for the children to help brighten their day and uplift their spirits. A special thank you goes out to all who participated in this wonderful act of love and kindness.
Next on their agenda of “Paying it Forward” and earning another stripe to their badge of excellence will be “Marching for Our Military.”
