Hero’s welcome

CADIZ – Staff Sgt Nicole Hopkins of Adena got a hero’s welcome at the Harrison County Airport Aug. 3. A flight medic in the Army, she was injured in Afghanistan during a rescue mission about three weeks ago. She suffered a fractured femur and damaged ligaments and tendons. She underwent extensive surgery in Germany for the life-threatening injury.

A Blackhawk helicopter transported her to Cadiz, where a large crowd awaited her arrival. They included family, friends, and representatives from the American Legion. A Stat medivac was also on hand to welcome her. Hopkins is part of a three-generation military family, her father George is a Vietnam veteran. George said he could not be more proud of her service.

Hopkins was awarded six gold points in March.
