New Athens preps for festival

NEW ATHENS – The public is invited to a fun filled day during the upcoming fire department’s festival Aug. 14. The 10th annual poker run will feature, with motorcycle enthusiasts starting and finishing at the firehall. The first bike will set out at 11 a.m. and the last at noon. Last bike in will be counted at 6 p.m. Entry fee is $15 per person.
“I hope the community comes out and supports us,” said Michael Saffell, president, adding that many people look forward to the events. Chicken dinners are free for all riders and passengers. The parade will line up at 6 p.m. and begin at 7 p.m. Awards will be given for best appearing brush truck, newest and oldest trucks, furthest distance traveled, most men in uniform, best squad, best under 1000 gpm and best over 1000 gpm.
The annual golf cart decoration contest is also scheduled. A cornhole tournament is set for 9 p.m. with registration at 8:30 p.m. T-shirts will be on sale and a 50/50 raffle will be featured.
Cameo A will DJ from 8 p.m. to midnight. Food, drink and inflatable games will be featured for the children. All proceeds will go to the purchase of equipment for the fire department.
The fire department is continuing payments on a tanker and may look into a new rescue vehicle in two years. Sponsors include Hometown Carryout. For more information, call -740-968-1001, 740-968-0536, or 740-968-1329.
