GAMBIER – For garden and outdoors lovers or photographers looking for the perfect day trip, Schnormeier Gardens, near Gambier, Ohio, is the ideal answer. And better yet, there is NO admission fee!

Owners Ted and Ann Schnormeier graciously open the Gardens, located on 75 acres of their own private property, for one week each year for visitors to explore. Their Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home was completed in 1994, and the gardens project was undertaken in 1996. Structures on the property include a Japanese teahouse, garden house, Chinese pavilion, and numerous bridges and waterfalls. Their gardens have “a distinct Asian flavor” and feature a variety of plants that are rich in color and texture. In all, the Schnomeiers have completed nine different gardens on the property, and welcome visitors this year from June 1 through June 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day to bask in the peaceful tranquility that the landscape has to offer.

All tours are self-guided, and since the property is hilly with no paved or designated pathways, visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. The Gardens are not recommended for those with limited mobility.

Those visiting the Gardens should start out their tour by stopping at the Welcome Center, located at 8701 Laymon Road. It features a DVD presentation, striking photos of the Gardens, and full-color tour maps. Parking is free, and restrooms are also available. For more information on the Schnormeier Gardens please contact Carol Garner at 740-397-7698, or visit the gardens Web page at

The gardens are located about 80 miles from Harrison County, between Gambier and Mt. Vernon, Ohio at 8701 Laymon Road, Gambier, Ohio 43022. Both towns offer many dining options and shops to complete your day trip.

It is said that a garden can have a soul…but only if it is shared with others. The Schnormeiers are delighted to share theirs with you.

    1. This is in our “backyard” just SE of Mt Vernon and a wonderful big layout for the gardener to enjoy.

Continue west on Baker Rd until you reach Laymon Rd on the right. You will see the grassy parking area with the entry with to Schnormeier Gardens below.

    2. Went there the first time in 2012 it was amazing and free wow.the only thing I can say is pack a lunch and go back to ur car and eat it.Or carry it with you.Just respect your surrondings it is so wonderful that this family does this.It takes a while to walk through the whole thing we missed the wooded area last year because we got hungry and had to leave.Plan on going again every year.

    3. We were there in 2015 and so looking forward to going back. We can not say enough good about the place and Thank the Schnormeier for such a wonderful experience. We ate before we started but we bring water and had no problem. There were places to drink and use the restroom. Thanks You for opening up your garden. This had to be a labor of love and I feel we are reaping the benefits.
