FREEPORT - The summer of festivals and fairs continues this month as the Freeport Firemen’s Fair kicks off July 27-28.
Organizers said this year’s event will include food, fun, music, games and a parade, and Mickey Mouse and friends will play a huge part since the theme is “A Walk Down Disney Lane.”
Fire Chief Bill Pittis said the fair begins around 4 p.m. that Friday with the fire department’s eat stand dishing out chicken and fish dinners and festival fare such as cotton candy, SnoCones and taco-in-a-bag. Raffles will be held to win prizes and kids’ inflatables and games, including a dunk tank, will also be available. Lineup for the parade starts at 5:30 p.m. near Select-O-Sep (the former Harrison Lakeland Elementary School) with the parade at 7 p.m.
“Last year we had about 40 or 50 units in the parade,” he said. “Our theme for this year is ‘A Walk Down Disney Lane,’ so the parade will be a Disney theme.”
The band Chameleon, which played at the Harrison County Fair, will perform in the village from 8-11 p.m.
The fair starts early the next day with a Tractor Cruise-in with signup at 8 a.m. and departure at 9 a.m., followed by a Small Engine Steam Show at 9 a.m. Registration begins for the car show at 10 a.m. to noon and the show itself runs from noon to 4 p.m. Kids’ games begin at 3 p.m. and the firemen will be back with their food stand at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the fair prince and princess will be crowned at 6:30 p.m. The event closes with a performance by the band Ren from 7-10 p.m.
“There are all kinds of activities Saturday,” he added, saying the children’s games were hosted by the Lakeland Democratic Women’s group.
Pittis said the decades-long fair is the department’s biggest fundraiser and helps operate the facility, which currently has 23 members. “It’s for basic operations. We use it for fire equipment, upkeep and daily operations of the fire department.” For more information, contact Bob Koch at 740-658-3428 or check out the fire department’s Facebook page.
